The Next Black Technology of Smartphone Cameras: Liquid Lenses

Today, liquid lenses may be the next black technology in smartphone cameras, and the Huawei P50 series may be the first to be equipped. Huawei is one of the best smartphone makers on the market and currently employs leading camera technology.

Recently, the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) approved an important camera module patent related to liquid lenses, which was filed by Huawei on December 25, 2019 and approved on April 7, 2020. The imaging system of the liquid lens can change the focal plane in milliseconds, providing a clear image regardless of the distance of the object from the camera, which makes the integrated liquid lens ideal for shooting situations that require focusing at multiple distances. The moving hardware includes a stator and a moving part that moves in the direction of the optical axis. When the moving part gets power from the motor, it works and squeezes or pulls the liquid lens through the attached spring.

Liquid lenses boast fast autofocus and depth detection, provide better image stabilization, and eliminate the need for time-of-flight (ToF) sensors and additional image stabilization hardware. And more importantly, the liquid lens takes up very little space.

According to the information, the patent includes moving motors, camera placeholders, and Electronic hardware for moving the liquid lens. The next-generation P50 is expected to be even more powerful in photography.
