Imagination Announces Leading University Teaching Course for Mobile Graphics

Shanghai, China and London, UK – 3 December 2019 – Imagination Technologies announces the offer of a complete mobile graphics processing course for undergraduate teaching as part of the Imagination University Project (IUP). The newly updated Introduction to Mobile Graphics 2020 includes a rich portfolio of teaching materials and practical exercises for the course based on Imagination’s popular PowerVR Graphics Processing Unit (GPU).

In colleges and universities, graphics processing techniques are often used as part of game development or computer science courses and are based on standard game console or personal computer (PC) graphics processing. But as consumers increasingly interact with the various types of graphics on their mobile devices through games and user interfaces (UIs), it is important for developers to understand the specific limitations of mobile devices, especially low-power Consumption rendering is one of the most important.

The new course design is suitable for students with basic or even no basic knowledge of graphics processing, and the course content can be flexibly adjusted to match most teaching methods and structures. The teaching modules of this course cover mobile graphics processing technology and its architecture, PowerVR mobile graphics processing development architecture, mobile graphics processing software development kit (SDK), texture mapping, transformation and shader program code examples including lighting models.

The 2020 version of the textbook will support OpenGL ES3.2 and add examples of using Vulkan. In addition, the course includes instructional courseware with presentation notes, including practical exercises for model solutions, and sample exam questions and answers. Practical exercises use the PowerVR OpenGL ES emulator, Chromebook, or the popular embedded platform BeagleBone Black. Examples and technical demonstrations of mobile games give students an intuitive understanding of the performance of mobile GPUs.

The teaching materials were developed in conjunction with Dr Darren McKie, Lecturer at the School of Computer Science and Technology at the University of Hull, UK, and Fellow of the Faculty of Higher Education. McKie said: “There are 3.3 billion smartphone users worldwide, and about half of the global gaming market is derived from mobile games. This represents a huge opportunity for mobile game developers, and this new course enables students to seize This opportunity. They will learn how to build, code and optimize rendering applications to develop games with richer features, while benefiting from low-power performance, users can spend more time immersed in the game.”
